Ziyyad Gulzar

Artist

Ziyyad Gulzar’s early work was with a band called Milestones with a female lead, a radical development in the Pakistan music scene. They disbanded after a couple of albums and he formed a band called “Akaash” with well known singer Ali Haider with whom he had 2 successful albums and toured for about 2 – 3 years. But the commercialism of the pop/rock music industry was at odds with his ethos as a composer and he left the scene completely to focus on composing. Along with a friend he created a project called “Rushk” over three to four years, and released an album, “Sawal” (Questionnew boundaries with little hope of commercial success. Instead it earned rave reviews, becoming a classic turning point in the contemporary music scene in South Asia and has developed a cult following.

Using music to create a narrative is Ziyyad’s passion, whatever the genre. He has composed for a variety of media from art and fashion productions to television and theatre which includes Amin Guljee’s “Alchemy”,“Dreams of Alexander” and the soundtrack of the Hollywood film, “A Mighty Heart” starring Angelina Jolie. Currently he is working on an art film project as well as composing interpretive music for a music installation studying the confluence of spirituality and reality.
